Barred Plymouth Rocks are an exceptional dual purpose breed and an old-time favorite American chicken. Barred Plymouth Rocks were developed in New England in the early 1800's by crossing Dominiques and Black Javas and recognized by the American Standard of Perfection as a distinct pure chicken breed in 1874.
This laid-back breed is a prolific layer of large brown eggs, performing well even in winter. They are yellow skinned and solidly plump making them a beautiful heavy roasting bird for the table. The Barred Plymouth Rock breed is very friendly and cold hardy. These lovely birds have black and white barred feathers, with the roosters slightly lighter in color than the hens. Baby chicks are dark gray to black with some white patches on head and body.
Commonly called, "Barred Rocks", which is a short name for the Barred Plymouth Rock chicken. Others confuse the Barred Rock chicken with the Dominique chicken breed. The Barred Rock has a single straight comb and has more of a straight pattern in the barred feathers. While the Dominique chicken has a rose comb and a slight "V" pattern in the barring of the feathers.
